SIMCOE REC CENTRE CLOSURE UPDATE
Norfolk Hockey Members,

On Tuesday, July 21, 2020, Norfolk County Council undertook a process that reversed the 2020 Budget resolution thatclosed the Simcoe Rec Centre arena and threatened the closure of a second Norfolk arena.

This is great news and we are truly appreciative of everyone’s efforts to contact the Mayor and Councillors to expressyour concerns regarding the serious impact these closures would have on our minor hockey programming.

We would encourage everyone to email those Councillors who supported the Reconsideration of this matter and thank them for their support!

They are:

Kim Huffman, Amy Martin, Ryan Taylor, Mike Columbus, Tom Masschaele and Roger Geysens.

They can be reached at:

It’s easy to email Councillors to ask for their help, please now take the time to thank them for listening and taking action!

BUT THE JOB ISN’T DONE!!!

At this point a new motion to determine the future of our arenas and recreational facilities was put forward by Kim Huffman and Amy Martin. Find a link to the motion below.

The Council vote on this motion will take place on August 18, 2020. The deferral to this date allows Norfolk Countystaff time to refine the cost implications associated with this motion.

This means that the status of Norfolk County’s arenas going into the 2020/20201 season is still to be determined!

Norfolk Minor Hockey will soon issue a formal letter regarding the new motion, however we are certainly supportiveof its direction. We are also very eager to work with Norfolk County and its committees to find better solutions to our arena challenges.

We know many Norfolk Hockey members are also very concerned over incorrect or misleading information providedby Norfolk County staff and Councillors during the Council meeting, specifically regarding our ice utilization rates and2020/2021 ice requirements. We are considering the most appropriate manner in which to address these issues.

In the meantime, thank you again for your support and action – YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE! We will communicatefurther over the coming weeks as we work to solidify Norfolk’s arena situation going into the upcoming hockeyseason, and beyond.

We will soon call on you to help again!

Thank you,

Board of Directors
Norfolk Minor Hockey Association
